When we partnered with Grayscale for the “Living Colour” graffiti jam, we had one clear goal: bring together Cape Town’s graffiti community across all generations and create something special on a massive Salt River wall. This wasn’t just about filling space with paint – it was about building bridges between artists who’ve been in the scene for decades and newcomers still finding their style.
40 Artists, One Wall, Two Days
We transformed a prominent Salt River wall into what we called the “Style Factory” – a creative space where different graffiti styles could converge and evolve. The concept was inspired by Salt River’s industrial history, but the energy came from something much more organic: 40 artists ranging from 10 to 55 years old, all bringing their unique approaches to the wall.
Watching a 10-year-old work alongside legends like Mak1, Gogga, and Falko – that’s what this scene is really about. It’s about passing knowledge, sharing techniques, and showing that graffiti culture thrives when generations connect.
More Than Just Paint on Wall
The energy on those two days was something else. Watching different generations of writers come together, seeing individual styles blend and bounce off each other – that’s what made this jam special. Having the chance to paint alongside SA graffiti legends like Mak1, Gogga, and Falko created moments that many of the younger artists will remember forever.
Cape Town can be a tough city to paint in, but events like this build up the culture and community in ways that really matter. This jam reinforced something we’ve always known – graffiti culture thrives on connection, on passing knowledge between generations, and on creating spaces where the art form can evolve.
What We Created
The Style Factory wall now stands as more than just a mural – it’s a landmark that represents the strength and diversity of Cape Town’s graffiti community. Every piece on that wall tells a story, not just of individual artists, but of a culture that refuses to be boxed in or written off.
This project proved what we’ve always believed: public art has the power to change perceptions and create real opportunities for artists and communities.
The Impact
Two days, 40 artists, one wall – and a reminder that graffiti culture is alive and evolving in Cape Town. This jam didn’t just create art; it strengthened the community that makes this culture possible.
Thanks to Grayscale for being incredible partners, Montana Cans for supporting the vision, and every artist who brought their energy to the wall. This is what happens when the community comes together.
